FINE PAVING TILES
The permanent exhibition
Around 1840, a brick maker from La Bisbal named Pere Pascual i Serena set up the first shop where fine paving tiles were manufactured. The success of this new product was astounding from the very start. A good number of new constructions (particularly well-to-do homes) built in the 19th century were paved with these fine tiles.
The splendid decorative effects achieved with these tiles were based on a combination of objects, sometimes using different shapes and sizes, with the use of white and red clays. Black was achieved through reduction firing.
The 19th century closed with the advent of the hydraulic mosaic floor tile, which led to the collapse of the business.
