COATING TILES

The permanent exhibition

Amidst the Neoclassicism and Noucentisme movements, from the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries, ceramic tiles for coating purposes achieved a sheen splendour characterized by production of the highest quality.

At the beginning of the coating tile boom, the industry used legacy and experience inherited from pre-industrial ceramic works, at the same time providing new production techniques (plaster moulds), mechanical contraptions (presses, moulding machines, etc.), decorative techniques (relief, incised decoration) and a bevy of unique , unprecedented shapes. These new contributions were based on typically craftsman like production structures.

By the 1920s, the production of coating tiles broke with the craftsman like structures of its origins and took a more industrial path, with a view to achieving standardized production.
